In order to create safer streets in DC, the project focused on improving the understanding of where crashes were occurring. The primary dataset, sourced from police crash reports, was incomplete, as many incidents documented in DC Fire & EMS call data were not included in police records. Data-Driven Streets combined these sources to build a more complete picture of traffic safety across the city. By applying data visualization techniques, the project identified previously unrecorded “ghost crashes,” supporting better-informed decisions around safer street planning and infrastructure improvements.
